Carbohydrate utilization in the pre-ruminant calf.

چکیده
3. Maltose and fructose utilization was low in young calves and increased slightly with age. 4. Sucrose and starch were not utilized. 5. Studies with three older pre-ruminant calves (aged 53, 88 and 106 days) in which the carbohydrates were infused into the proximal duodenum showed that glucose, galactose, lactose and xylose all caused marked increases in the level of blood reducing sugar, whereas fructose and sucrose caused no increase, and maltose was intermediate. Xylose and galactose caused very little change in the blood glucose concentration. 6. It appeared that preferential uptake occurred of glucose from a glucose-galactose mixture. 7. A non-linear relationship was found between the concentration of glucose or galactose hydrate utilization in pre-ruminant calves aged between 10 and 50 days.

Congenital hepatic fibrosis in an aborted calf
An aborted female Holstein foetus with marked generalized anasarca was referred to the Excellence Centre for Ruminant Abortion and Neonatal Mortality, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. On postmortem examination, red-tinged ascites, pale and firm liver with extreme irregularity and numerous round to oval slightly raised foci on the capsular surface were seen. Histological examination revealed wide...
متن کاملMicrowave irradiation of whole soybeans in ruminant nutrition: Protein and carbohydrate metabolism in vitro and in situ
Whole soybeans serve as one of the main sources of protein in ruminant nutrition. Different processing methods have been employed for ruminal protein protection. The present study was conducted to determine the effects of microwave irradiation [900 W; 2, 4 and 6 min] on quality, ruminal degradability and estimated in vitro intestinal digestibility of availability soybean crude protein....
متن کاملThe effect of environmental temperature on the performance and health of the pre-ruminant and ruminant calf.
I. Eighty bull calves, comprising forty-eight Ayrshire and sixteen each of the Friesian and Jersey breeds, were used in a randomized block experiment. Forty calves were maintained at a mean environmental temperature of 21' and forty at 14.5'. Within each temperature, twenty calves were reared from birth on a liquid milk substitute diet (pre-ruminant calves) and twenty were weaned at 35 d of age...
متن کاملGenomic analysis of three Bifidobacterium species isolated from the calf gastrointestinal tract
Ruminant animals contribute significantly to the global value of agriculture and rely on a complex microbial community for efficient digestion. However, little is known of how this microbial-host relationship develops and is maintained. To begin to address this, we have determined the ability of three Bifidobacterium species isolated from the faeces of newborn calves to grow on carbohydrates ty...
متن کاملComparison of ruminal and post-ruminal digestion of a concentrate feed in the young calf.
Pre-ruminant calves were pair-fed a concentrate feed in either liquid form (LC) from a nipple bottle or in dry form (DC). We then studied the effects of these two forms of feed on body weight gain, feed utilization, digestibility, digestive enzyme secretion and volatile fatty acids in the rumen liquor. The live weight gain of calves receiving the liquid concentrate was depressed by 34 p. 100. T...
